Our Common Time

There’s a perspective that I find isn’t entirely captured when looking at old photographs of my own family. There are always the objective details like whose house the picture was taken in or what car someone was driving at the time, but after that split-second click of the shutter there continued for each person in and outside of the frame a life full of complicated thoughts, emotions, realizations, and experiences that I also wonder about. Not for the mundane, everyday ongoings, but for the fleeting moments in between—any time my dad could have wrote about what he was going through but couldn’t find the words or any time my mom wondered if anyone had ever felt what she was feeling before.
Such anecdotes from this life aim to be the heart of this blog, a collection of writing that hopes to serve as the fine print for the hundreds of photographs that my kids, nieces, nephews, and grandkids will one day inevitably dust off; photos taken today, during the same formative years that they might be going through when they’re old enough to ask “How old were you in this picture, dad?” Beyond that will be writings on tech, music, film, and art—things that, among others, inspire my day-to-day.
So if there is ever someone down the line, on a tiny branch of the family tree stemming from mine, who is as curious as I am now about the roots that came before them, they’ll be able to find some semblance of an answer here.
